Official WhatsApp API or bulk sending tools: how to choose

If you want to message customers at scale on WhatsApp, you’ll usually end up choosing between two routes: Meta’s official WhatsApp Business API, or a bulk tool that works some other way. They look similar from the outside, but they carry very different risks.

What the official API is

The official API is the route Meta provides for businesses. You connect your number through Meta’s signup flow and use a panel such as MeAPI to manage conversations.

  • Templates: messages that start a conversation need a template that Meta has approved.
  • Consent: you’re expected to message people who have opted in.
  • Costs: Meta charges for certain messages, on top of whatever your panel costs.

What unofficial tools are

These include desktop software, browser extensions and portals that don’t use Meta’s official API. They can be cheaper to start with and need less setup.

The trade-off is real: WhatsApp can restrict or ban numbers used this way. Be careful with any seller who promises “no blocking”, because nobody outside WhatsApp can guarantee that.

How to decide

The official API usually makes more sense if:

  • The number is your main business number, and losing it would hurt.
  • Your customers have agreed to hear from you.
  • You want a team inbox, chatbots and reports you can rely on.

Before you choose an unofficial tool, ask yourself:

  • Could the business cope if this number stopped working tomorrow?
  • Do the people you’re messaging actually expect to hear from you?
  • Would your customers be comfortable with how you got their number?

Where to start

Start small. Connect one number, get one useful template approved, and send it to customers who already know you. If you’d like help working out what fits, ask us for a quote. We sell both kinds of tools, and our store clearly marks the ones that aren’t on the official API.
